Nine simple words that might preserve your sanity

Issue #124 | June 19, 2026 | Previous issues

Hey Reader,

I'm going to keep this short and sweet.

At least I'll try. lol

I've been saying a phrase to myself recently that has been saving me a lot of stress.

It's not exactly a mantra.

It's more like a simple instruction for my nervous system and brain to follow.

I'm sure if you tried to count how many irritating situations you encounter in a day, you'd run out of fingers and toes.

Don't bother thinking too hard on that one.

Instead, I want you to commit this phrase to memory and use it like preventative medicine.

I warn you, the phrase is deceptively simple, so don't laugh before you try it.

I don't need to have an emotion about that.

Here's how it works.

Your husband leaves the dishes overnight in the sink for you to clean up the next day...again.

As soon as you feel the irritation rise, you pause and say I don't need to have an emotion about that.

And then carry on.

Someone cuts you off in traffic or is driving up your rear tail...I don't need to have an emotion about that.

And then carry on.

Your friend or coworker gives you a rather hard piece of criticism...I don't need to have an emotion about that.

And then carry on.

I'm telling you, these 9 simple words have helped me preserve so much energy.

Because not everything deserves a reaction.

Not everything needs access to your peace.

Not everything gets to boss your nervous system around.

And it puts you in control.

You get to choose what actually deserves an emotion.

Try it this week and let me know how it works for you.

With love,

Anna

P.S. Seriously. Try it before you roll your eyes.

Two turkey vultures perched on a mossy tree branch.

Issue #125 | June 26, 2026 | Previous issues Hey Reader, Yesterday, my friend Nicole and I went for a walk and saw two turkey vultures munching on carrion. Yum, lol, for them. I wasn't raised in a time when Google was at your fingertips and info was accessible anytime, anywhere. It has taken me awhile to get used to whipping out my phone and doing research on the spot. I'm used to having to wait for answers. I'm used to planning trips to the library where I had to search for the right book to...

Crowned dust

Issue #123 | June 12, 2026 | Previous issues Hey Reader, It's hard to look around the planet and think of humans as crowned dust. I like to "joke" that we're devolving as a human race. Overall, we humans look pretty pathetic in the grand scheme of things. War. Poverty. Violence. Domestic and child abuse. Politics. Pollution. And these are just samples. I often wonder why we spend billions of dollars searching space for more intelligent life, because if superior beings DO exist, the last place...

Issue #122 | June 5, 2026 | Previous issues Hey Reader, 🥳 It's JUNE. Which marks the beginning of my favorite season. June, July, and August are when I thrive (at least in New York). Spring is beautiful—the pink peonies have been divine perfection. Autumn colors cannot be imitated by anyone's paintbrush (sorry artists). I adore snow and ice skating. But Summer. That is where my heart belongs. That's when my body relaxes and unfurls especially as I bask in the sunshine. If I had it my way,...
